Angelaaaaa 😍 the way you write is so perfect, I felt like I could visualise everything. I remember that feeling of having your own place for the very first time - exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure! I too had an abundance of fairy lights - I think they made me feel less alone!
Oh my gosh stop, you are so sweet!!!! Thank you 😭😭😭
Isn't it the best?! It's one of those firsts you really can't appreciate until it's so far in the rearview and then you never get it back. It's exactly like you said. Exhilarating, terrifying, freeing. And the fairy lights! Such a rite of passage in first apartments everywhere 😆
Oh, the first apartment. Mine was in NYC, but out in Long Island City in 1984 (I was 23). A view of the UN building which lit up fiery gold at dawn from the window above my fire escape. The neighborhood diner at the corner. The tarpaper roof. I loved it all so much.
oh wow, I can't even imagine having your very first apartment be in NYC like that!!! Fire escapes, diners, and the indiscretions of youth are what I always think of when I think of girlhood and coming of age, and you were right there living it!!! I would totally read a piece about this. :D
I'd lived in an apartment in LA with a roommate, trying to make a living as an actress abd mostly waiting tables. But NYC was my first solo living experience. And yes, it was a coming of age time. I wrote a memoir about those NYC years, but then edited it all down to a couple of flashback chapters in Honeymoon at Sea, my sailing memoir that's also an origin story that begins when I was 28.

I'm enjoying my reignited love for high waisted shorts and crop tops so I too am trying not to wish the Summer away but also when writing this I was like "oooh is it too early to light apple cinnamon candles???" 😆
Omg. Every. Word. 🖤
🖤🖤🖤
Thank you 🥹🫶

Ok now THIS sounds fascinating! I was about to say, this sounds like it needs to be in a book but apparently you had the same idea!
I sent you a direct message here.
