It's 3 a.m. The chill of November has settled into your bones. You rub your hands together, stale breath reverberating back as you cup your hands around your mouth. You are in battle mode out here. You and a few hundred others, each fighting for the same prize. You'll have to be ruthless if you want 49% off that 51-inch TV. You'll need to be nimble to grab that Star Wars LEGO set. You sink into your broken-in folding chair, the one you take with you every year, and realize, while a good thought, that this will not sustain you much longer. Nor will the granola bar you had for breakfast when you rose excitedly at 2 a.m. No matter, it’s almost time. You check your watch. 4:47am now. Any minute.
The doors open. The line comes to life, anticipatory chatter and over-caffeinated whoops. It’s time. Black Friday has officially started.
Ok, so maybe I’m dating myself here, but I remember a time when this was the reality of Black Friday. Now, it’s all online which, thank god. It was getting scary out there. If like me, you’ve been waiting to score a good deal on some writerly essentials, I hope this list gets you started!
Tools
Scrivener
First up is my favorite tool for writing—Scrivener! If you’ve been eyeing this for a while, now’s your chance. They're doing 25% off on Black Friday only. Even better than that, NaNoWriMo participants can always grab a discount. that's actually even better—20% off for participants, 50% off for winners (meaning you completed your word count by end of the month).
*Note, many programs like this are doing Black Friday deals. I can’t speak to them because I don’t use them, but for instance Atticus
Grammarly
Computers have made me an abysmal speller, so I do rely on Grammarly for quickly cleaning up my mistakes. Through December 6th, Grammarly Pro is offering 50% off their Pro plans.
NOTE: I am not condoning using the AI part of Grammarly. I feel like I shouldn't need to say this.
Cornerstones
Not a Black Friday deal per se, but Cornerstones, which I talked about in this article about what it’s like to work with a developmental editor, is still offering their free critique on your query + first 10 pages—I highly recommend taking them up on that when you’re ready!
Stationary
Moleskin
I love me a notebook. Moleskin is doing a discount of 15%-30% off depending on your purchase order. Time to stock up on more notebooks you’ll be too afraid to touch!
Papier
AKA the most adorable notebooks and stationary, Papier is doing 20% off for Black Friday, so you can go wild setting the aestethic for your most productive 2025.
Michaels
If like me you prefer to browse the aisles of Michael for approx 2.5 hours and agonize over which cute notebook is going to be *the one* and which set of pens will change your life, then you’ll love knowing that they’re hosting a ton of Black Friday deals, with up to 70% off.
Archer and Olive
Because your notebooks need friends.
Mood Setters
to get the vibe *just* right.
Frostbeard Studio —Candles for Book lovers
Black Friday deals ranging from 15%-20% off and scents ranging from descriptions like “stormy, stargazing, moss” (Babylon Candle) and the seasonal “pine, fig, orange, and pepper” (Bah Humbug) and my favorite, “mahogony, leather, and coffee” (Bookstore!) I might just have to try these myself.
Fairy Lights (Etsy)
Is there anything cozier than a writing space laced in fairy lights? There are SO many to choose from on Etsy, and most are having Black Friday sales. Do a little perusing, find your vibe, and voila. Instant aesthetic.
Misc Etsy
I had to stop myself from going crazy searching Etsy for different things to buy because the truth is there is SO much and I can justify all of it! If you need a few ideas: lap blankets, desk lamps, vintage anything, custom mugs or tumblers, book ends, prints and posters, custom bookplates. Have fun with it!
Let me know what I missed and what you’re saving up for on Black Friday!
Thank you for this list, Angela!
